The Emerson/Motorola MVME5500 is a VMEbus single-board computer built on the NXP MPC7457 or MPC7455 PowerPC processor operating at 1 GHz. Designed for industrial, embedded, defense, aerospace, and medical imaging applications, it combines dual 64-bit PCI buses operating at 33/66 MHz with VME64 compliance and dual PMC expansion sites. The board integrates 512 MB of on-board PC133 ECC SDRAM (expandable to 1 GB), 40 MB flash memory, 32 KB NVRAM, and a Gigabit Ethernet interface plus 10/100BaseTX Ethernet. The MPC7457/MPC7455 includes 32 KB instruction/32 KB data L1 cache, 512 KB L2 cache, 2 MB L3 cache, and AltiVec coprocessor support for computational performance. Dual independent PCI buses with 3.3V or 5V configurable signaling support both legacy IPMC modules and modern PMC cards. The Marvell GT-64260B or Discovery system controller manages the 133 MHz host and memory bus architecture. VMEbus compliance includes Tundra Universe II controller with round-robin/priority arbitrage, IRQ 1-7 interrupt handling, and A16-A32 DTB master with D08-D64 data width. Flash write protection, replaceable RTC battery (M48T37V TOD device), and 50-year NVRAM cell storage life at 55°C provide long-term reliability. Backward compatibility with existing VMEbus infrastructure enables technology refresh migrations from previous Emerson platforms.
