The EXFO Puma 4000E is a field-portable analyzer for installation, maintenance, and testing of 2.048 Mbit/s PCM and data communications circuits. It delivers comprehensive troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and validation across telecom and datacom network infrastructure through dual E1 transmit/receive ports supporting fully bi-directional drop and insert testing.

– Key Features
Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT)
Performs error rate analysis across G.703 unframed and G.704 framed HDB3/AMI signals. Supports user-selectable patterns (up to 32 bits), fixed 4/8 bit patterns, QRSS, and PRBS (2^3 to 2^32-1). Error injection in pattern, framing, and alarm bits. Records G.821, G.826, and M.2100 results. Bi-directional drop and insert test modes conform to ITU-T O.151, O.152, O.153.
Propagation Delay Measurement
Measures round-trip delay at 1 microsecond resolution; calculates approximate copper equivalent distance.
Pulse Mask Conformance
Analyzes E1 output pulse height and shape against ITU-T pulse mask templates from regenerators, PABXs, and multiplexers.
Jitter Measurement
Identifies timing and clock problems on E1 links.
– Typical Applications
• PBX to PSTN interconnections
• Mobile base station connectivity
• Private digital circuit provisioning
• PCM voice traffic transport
• Frame relay and IP networks
• ISDN and WAN connectivity
– Compatibility & Integration
Supports ITU-T G.703, G.704, and O.151/O.152/O.153 standards. PCMCIA expansion slot enables additional functionality. VT100 terminal emulation provides craft port access.
