The HP/Agilent 3787B Communication Analyzer is a telecommunications test instrument designed for error performance analysis, jitter testing, and protocol analysis across R&D, manufacturing, and field service environments. The analyzer generates and measures signals across telecommunications frequency bands while supporting multiple modulation schemes including AM, FM, and digital techniques. It performs real-time bit error rate (BER) measurements with statistical confidence intervals, counts and classifies error types such as bit errors, block errors, and errored seconds, and generates controlled jitter to assess device resilience. Jitter measurement capabilities include amplitude and frequency analysis across synchronous and asynchronous standards, with decomposition into deterministic and random components. Protocol analysis covers PDH, SDH/SONET, and data protocols through frame capture, decoding, and detailed trace analysis. Signal quality assessment includes SNR measurement, received signal level detection, frequency and timing measurements, and data throughput analysis.
