The Marconi IFR Aeroflex 2841 is a portable, battery-operated handheld transmission analyzer for installation and maintenance of 2 Mbit/s digital lines and equipment. It combines data interface testing with 2 Mbit/s transmission analysis in a single instrument, enabling comprehensive testing of both digital circuits and data transmission systems. As a derivative of the 2840A, the 2841 adds dedicated data interface capabilities to core transmission analysis functionality.
Technical Specifications
2 Mbit/s Transmission Analysis
• Supports framed and unframed operation at 2 Mbit/s, including n x 64 kbit/s channel testing
• Generates and receives G.704 framing systems with 30 and 31 channels, with and without CRC4, plus 32-frame multiframe (Option 02)
• Tests n x 64 kbit/s channels within 2 Mbit/s signals with contiguous and non-contiguous selection flexibility
• Individual channels testable at 64 kbit/s
• Analog measurements on selected 2 Mbit/s channels: frequency response, linearity, peak code, RMS level, and frequency
• Transmitter generates sine waves across the full audio band with 1 Hz frequency resolution and 0.1 dB level resolution
• High-accuracy delay measurements on 2048 kbit/s digital circuits, particularly for satellite links and network characterization
Data Interface Testing
• Supported interfaces: RS-232, X.21, V.35, RS-449 (V.36), codirectional, and contradirectional
• Synchronous and asynchronous modes with standard and user-programmable data rates
• Independent transmitter and receiver for simultaneous connection to data and 2 Mbit/s interfaces to verify data card to 2 Mbit/s path integrity
Error and Alarm Measurements
• Simultaneous detection of code, framing, pattern, and CRC errors
• G.821, G.826, and M.2100 performance analysis
• Error results and alarms displayed in histogram format with 7-day accumulation and 1-second resolution
• Data logging: 4000 print events (errors, parameters, alarms) stored in memory for later retrieval
Clocking and Synchronization
• Internal, external, or signal-derived clock sources
• Internal clock accuracy: ±1 ppm from 0°C to 55°C
• Dual receiver inputs for clock slip measurement on two 2 Mbit/s HDB3 signals, essential for detecting clocking configuration errors on multiplexes
