Equipment info

The HP 8665A Synthesized Signal Generator delivers precise signal generation across 0.1 MHz to 4200 MHz, engineered for demanding RF test and measurement applications. This instrument combines low-noise performance with flexible modulation capabilities, making it ideal for radar systems, telemetry, receiver spurious response analysis, and clock source applications requiring minimal phase jitter. The 0.01 Hz frequency resolution and -140 dBc/Hz SSB phase noise (20 kHz offset at 1 GHz with Option 004) enable accurate out-of-channel receiver measurements and sensitive detection work.

Technical Specifications

• Frequency Range: 0.1 MHz to 4200 MHz
• Frequency Resolution: 0.01 Hz
• Amplitude Range: -139.9 dBm to +13 dBm
• Output Impedance: 50 Ohms
• SSB Phase Noise: Typically < -140 dBc/Hz at 20 kHz offset at 1 GHz (Option 004)
• Nonharmonic Spurious: Typically < -100 dBc to 2 GHz
• Harmonics: < -30 dBc at ≤ +7 dBm output levels
• Power Requirements: 100, 120, 220, or 240 Vac (±5%, -10%), 48 to 440 Hz, 125 VA maximum

– Key Features

• Modulation: AM (0–100% depth), FM (up to 2 MHz rates, 20 MHz peak deviation), and optional pulse modulation (50 ns to 999 ns width/delay, < 5 ns rise/fall times)
• Internal Modulation Source: 0.1 Hz to 400 kHz with sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, and white Gaussian noise waveforms
• Two Independent Modulation Sources: Enables two-tone testing
• Sweep Functions: Fully supported
• RF Leakage: < 1.0 µV induced in a two-turn loop (2.5 cm diameter, 2.5 cm standoff); meets MIL STD 461B CE03 and RE02
• Reverse Power Protection: Rated to 50 W (50 Ω source) up to 990 MHz

– Typical Applications

• Radar and telemetry signal generation
• UHF receiver spurious response testing
• Out-of-channel receiver measurements
• Clock source applications with low phase jitter
