The HP/Agilent 84906K is a programmable electromechanical step attenuator delivering precise attenuation control from DC to 26.5 GHz. Operating in 10 dB increments across a 0 to 90 dB range, it combines high reliability with exceptional repeatability of better than 0.03 dB, making it ideal for RF test systems, signal conditioning, and calibration work. The attenuator uses miniature thin-film attenuation cards composed of tantalum nitride on sapphire substrate for stable, accurate performance. Its latched solenoid switching mechanism with permanent magnets withstands shocks exceeding 10 Gs, while automatic solenoid disconnect after switching minimizes power consumption and simplifies driver circuits. Insertion loss remains below 2 dB at 26.5 GHz. The 84906K is 35% more compact than the earlier 8495/7 family, reducing footprint in automated test equipment and instrument integration. Switching durability exceeds 5 million cycles per section. Standard 3.5 mm female RF connectors support various options including 3.5 mm male/female, 2.92 mm female, and 2.4 mm configurations. Programming uses 10-pin DIP headers. Maximum RF input power ratings are 1 W average and 50 W peak.
