The Marconi IFR Aeroflex 6848A is a multi-function RF and microwave system analyzer combining a synthesized source, scalar analyzer, and spectrum analyzer in a single instrument. It characterizes RF and microwave components and systems with insertion loss, return loss, and scalar network measurements from 1 MHz to 3 GHz, plus spectrum analysis extending to 20 GHz. The internal synthesized source operates in multiple modes: CW output, swept source for scalar measurements, tracking generator with spectrum analyzer, and offset tracking for frequency translation device analysis. EEPROM-corrected scalar detectors deliver >80 dB insertion loss measurement capability. The spectrum analyzer provides up to 80 dB instantaneous dynamic range with resolution bandwidths from 3 MHz to 1 kHz, spurious performance better than -60 dBc on full span sweeps, and integral frequency counter for signal identification. A full-range tracking generator with offset tracking capability supports mixer and upconverter/downconverter measurements. FM demodulation with built-in loudspeaker enables identification of interfering transmissions. Real-time transmission line fault location accuracy reaches 0.1%.
