Using a visible light LED beam and photo-transistor sensor, it captures RPM data with ±1 digit accuracy across a wide measurement envelope. The instrument features a 5-digit LED display (0.4 inches high) with floating decimal and dual measurement modes: non-contact operation up to 30,000 RPM at distances to 2 feet, and contact measurement via threaded adapter up to 5,000 RPM. A single-chip C-MOS microcomputer manages readings with a 1-second update interval.
