The Tektronix SD-51 Trigger Head is a specialized trigger accessory that extends the triggering capabilities of compatible digital sampling oscilloscopes and communications signal analyzers. It enables precise synchronization for capturing high-frequency signals across a broad bandwidth, making it essential for semiconductor testing, TDR characterization, and high-speed digital communications applications.
Technical Specifications
Trigger Bandwidth: 1 GHz to 20 GHz typical
RMS Jitter: Less than 6 ps (includes instrument mainframe and SD-24 jitter)
Input Sensitivity: Minimum 1 mVp-p
Maximum Input Voltage: 5 Vp-p
Input Impedance: 50 Ω termination with approximately 1 pF capacitance
Trigger Output: Stable 2 mV output into 50 Ω load. Pulse repetition rate ranges from 6 to 11 kHz depending on input signal frequency. The output is preceded by a low-amplitude 2 MHz burst reflecting the internal oscillator frequency. When freerunning (no input signal or input below 1 mVp-p threshold), trigger pulses occur approximately every 12 ms.
Connectors: Precision 3.5 mm connectors, mechanically compatible with SMA standard
– Key Features
• Front panel SYNC control for synchronizing the internal oscillator with input signals
• Freerun capability providing stable trigger output independent of input signal presence
• Operates on flexible extender cable (Tektronix part 12122) to optimize signal path length
• Designed for installation into the front panel of compatible instruments
– Typical Applications
• Semiconductor device testing and characterization
• Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements
• High-speed digital data communications analysis
– Compatibility & Integration
The SD-51 integrates with 11800 Series Digital Sampling Oscilloscopes, CSA 803 Series Communications Signal Analyzers, 11801A/B/C and 11802 oscilloscopes, and the SM-11 Multi-Channel Unit. Installation and removal must occur with mainframe power off. Use a torque wrench set to 7 ± 1 lb/in (79 ± 112 N/cm) for connector tightening. ESD protection via wrist strap is required during handling.
