The Advantest Q8172 is a 2×5 optical channel selector that routes two common input channels to any of five individual output channels. Purpose-built for automated multi-channel fiber testing, it eliminates manual reconfiguration and delivers the switching speed required in DWDM validation, optical component manufacturing, and R&D environments where test repeatability is critical.
Technical Specifications
Configuration & Switching
• 2×5 optical switch: two common channels (COMMON A and B) selectable to channels 1–5
• Single-mode fiber (SMF) throughout
• Operating temperature range: -20°C to +55°C storage
• Designed for horizontal operation
Optical Performance
• Wavelength support: 1.3 µm and 1.55 µm bands
• Channel and common I/O connectors for all optical paths
Control & Interface
• Front-panel pushbutton operation for direct switching
• GPIB interface for remote and automated test sequences
• DIP switch configuration for GPIB address selection
Power Supply
• AC 100V/120V: 0.30 A time-lag fuse
• AC 220V/240V: 0.15 A time-lag fuse
• AC power input connector; fuse accessible after power-down
Mechanical
• Chassis grounding terminal
• Standard optical connector interface
– Key Features
• Dual-path switching: Simultaneous routing of two independent optical signals to any of five downstream channels
• GPIB automation: Full integration into ATE systems and multi-instrument test sequences
• Connector integrity: Ferrule cleaning (lens paper or alcohol-dampened gauze) and inert gas purging for dust removal
• Fast reconfiguration: Eliminates manual patch-cord swaps between test runs
– Typical Applications
• DWDM system characterization and channel isolation testing
• Multi-wavelength optical component qualification
• Wavelength-dependent fiber and module acceptance testing
• Research laboratories requiring high-speed, repeatable optical routing
– Compatibility & Integration
The Q8172 accepts standard SMF connectors and integrates via GPIB into lab automation frameworks. Front-panel control enables standalone operation; GPIB addressing is configured via DIP switches before power-on. Operating Manual (EQ8172) provides detailed switching tables and GPIB command syntax.
