The HP 8152A Optical Average Power Meter delivers precise measurement of optical power levels across both absolute and relative modes within lightwave test environments. This versatile instrument quantifies output power from active optical components, loss and attenuation in passive optical structures, and ratio measurements at identical or different wavelengths. The meter accepts interchangeable optical heads and integrates two independent optical inputs for flexible measurement configurations. Remote control via HP-IB (IEEE-488) enables complete programmability of all functions.
Technical Specifications
Measurement Range: +3 dBm to −80 dBm (with HP 81521B optical head)
Resolution: 0.01 dB, with best-case sensitivity of 10 pW
Wavelength Coverage: 450 nm to 1700 nm, depending on optical head selection. HP 81520A covers 450–1020 nm; HP 81521B covers 900–1700 nm; HP 81522A covers 1000–1550 nm.
Accuracy: ±5% relative (calibrated at 1300 nm and −20 dBm, logarithmic reading); ±0.05 dB absolute (15%) for both 81520A and 81521B heads. Linearity typically 1% across all optical heads.
Sensor Elements: Cooled Si PIN diode (81520A), cooled Ge PIN diode (81521B), or cooled InGaAs PIN diode (81522A). All sensors feature 5 mm diameter apertures and −3 dB bandwidth of 5 kHz.
