Equipment info

The NI PXIe-5653 is a high-performance Local Oscillator (LO) synthesizer module for RF and microwave applications requiring precision signal generation and low phase noise performance. It serves as the synthesizer source within vector signal analyzer and transceiver systems, delivering continuous-wave LO signals across three independently tuned outputs. The module integrates dual onboard OCXOs—10 MHz and 100 MHz references—enabling flexible reference distribution to companion digitizer and analyzer modules. Two PXIe slots are required for deployment within a PXI Express chassis.

Technical Specifications

• Frequency Coverage: 800 MHz to 8.3 GHz overall
• LO1 Output: 3.2 GHz to 8.3 GHz (nominal)
• LO2 Output: 4.0 GHz (nominal)
• LO3 Output: 800 MHz (nominal)
• Generation Mode: Continuous-wave (CW)
• Output Connectors: Three SMA connectors (LO1, LO2, LO3) at 50 Ω nominal impedance
• Reference Input: 10 MHz, 2 Vpk-pk maximum
• Reference Outputs: 10 MHz and 100 MHz from onboard OCXOs
• Power Supply: +3.3 VDC at 3.63 W (1.10 A) and +12 VDC at 48 W
• Operating Temperature: 0°C to 55°C
• Storage Temperature: -41°C to 71°C
• Dimensions: 8.5 × 1.6 × 5.1 inches
• Weight: 37.8 oz
• Warm-up Time: Approximately 30 minutes

– Key Features

• Integrated FPGA list mode memory, sequencer, multi-loop synthesizer, and phase-locked loops
• Daisy-chainable 100 MHz reference clock output for slave digitizer modules
• Onboard 10 MHz and 100 MHz OCXOs with independent reference routing
• Operating vibration rated to 0.3 grms (5 Hz to 500 Hz)
• STATUS indicators for module access and signal generation verification

– Typical Applications

• Vector signal analyzer (VSA) systems: PXIe-5665, PXIe-5667, PXIe-5668
• Vector signal transceiver (VST) instruments: PXIe-5831, PXIe-5832
• Multi-stage downconversion configurations with RF downconverter modules

– Compatibility & Integration

The module mounts immediately right of the NI-5603 RF Downconverter and routes three LO outputs to corresponding LO inputs on the downconverter front panel. The 100 MHz reference output connects to the CLK IN of the NI-5622 IF Digitizer. The 10 MHz reference output connects to REF IN of the PXIe-5694. External 10 MHz reference signals may be supplied via REF IN for phase-locking to system timing.
