Equipment info

The HP 8340B and 8341B Synthesized Sweeper Operating Manual documents two high-performance RF/microwave signal sources that function as integrated sweep oscillators, frequency counters, and synthesizers. These instruments combine multiple test functions into a single unit, eliminating the need for separate equipment in both manual and automated test environments. The manual covers installation, operation, calibration, and troubleshooting procedures.

Technical Specifications

Frequency Coverage
• HP 8340B: 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz
• HP 8341B: 10 MHz to 20.0 GHz

Output Power
• Range: −110 dBm to +20 dBm
• Resolution: 0.05 dB
• Power sweep capability: >20 dB dynamic range

Modulation Characteristics
Pulse modulation delivers ON/OFF ratio >80 dB with rise and fall times ≤25 ns. Internally leveled RF pulse width minimum is ≤100 ns; unleveled pulse width typically ≤25 ns. Amplitude modulation operates from DC to 100 kHz at 0 to 90% depth with 100%/V sensitivity. Frequency modulation spans 50 kHz to 10 MHz with selectable sensitivity (1 MHz/V or 10 MHz/V) and peak deviation to 10 MHz or specified multiples of modulation rate depending on frequency band. Pulse, amplitude, and frequency modulation operate simultaneously.

Time Base and Frequency Stability
10 MHz internal time base ages less than 1 × 10⁻⁹/day and 2 × 10⁻⁷/year after 30-day warm-up. External frequency standard input accepts 5 MHz ±50 Hz or 10 MHz ±100 Hz at 0 to +10 dBm.

Switching Performance
CW switching time is better than 50 ms (typically <35 ms). Fast phase-lock programming reduces typical switching to 11 to 22 ms.

Spectral Purity
SSB noise level in 1 Hz bandwidth ranges from −130 dBc at 1 Hz offset to −150 dBc at 30 Hz offset. HP 8341B with Option 003 maintains harmonics at least 50 dB below carrier across 1.4 to 20 GHz.

– Key Features

• HP-IB (IEEE-488) programming and control interface
• HP 8340B RF output: APC-3.5 Male connector
• HP 8341B RF output: Type N Female connector
• 50-ohm nominal impedance
• Option C06 (8341B): External phase lock capability
• Option 003 (8341B): Enhanced harmonic performance

– Compatibility & Integration

The 8340B and 8341B interface with microwave network analyzers including the HP 8510B. Integration into existing test systems via HP-IB enables replacement of multiple discrete instruments.
